Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to be fit to participate in sessions with a Kinesiologist?
Your rehabilitation program is customized based on your injuries and your physical ability. We help people who haven’t exercised in years as well as helping athletes (and everyone in between).
How soon after a motor vehicle accident, can I start treatment with a Kinesiologist?
It is a good idea to have a conversation with your doctor about when it is appropriate you for to start active rehabilitation. This is dependent on your injuries. It’s not uncommon for someone to start six to eight weeks after their accident. The earlier you start an active component of your rehabilitation, the quicker you will recover.
How often should I attend?
Typically, we recommend you attend sessions with a Kinesiologist two to three days per week. You will also be given homework exercises to be done to accelerate your recovery.
How long is a typical program?
The length of your program depends on the severity of your injuries. It is typical for a program to be 4 to 8 weeks in length. Individuals with severe injuries may need to participate in a longer program.
Do I need to stop my other therapies during my Kinesiology program?
You can continue to attend massage therapy or chiropractic treatment while you are participating in an exercise rehab program.
What happens during a typical session with a Kinesiolgist?
Typically your Kinesiologist would have you start with an easy five minute warm up walking on the treadmill or riding the stationary bicycle. Following your warm up, the Kinesiologist would have you perform gentle strength and stability exercises that are customized for your injuries. The last ten minutes of the session is spend performing injury specific stretches.
What happens if I need more treatment than what ICBC has agreed to fund?
We can request that ICBC fund additional treatment for you. It may be necessary for you to get a second doctor’s referral in order for ICBC to fund additional sessions.
“In February 2017, I was involved in a car accident. I was rear-ended and my car was totalled. I suffered soft tissue damage to my neck, wrists, shoulders, lower back and left knee. After the accident, I was in pain and had frequent headaches. I could not sit for long, simple tasks like getting in or out of my car were painful; other activities like running, playing soccer, basketball were also painful. During my active rehabilitation sessions with Stefanie Baumann from Nova Active Rehab, I learned very useful techniques to safely be physically active again, to strengthen my core and reduce my pain. I am very pleased with Nova Active Rehab and Stefanie. They are thorough and knowledgeable. I would recommend their services anytime”.
