Active rehab is a term used to describe exercise therapy generally performed in a clinic or weight room setting. Aqua therapy is exercise rehabilitation performed in shallow or deep water.
Aqua sessions are an hour in length.

In some cases, if you have extended medical coverage, pool based active rehab sessions may be covered. Please check your policy or with your insurance carrier.
Strength and mobility exercises are performed in the water. A Kinesiologist leads these sessions. Exercises are performed in the shallow end where the water is approximately chest height. If you feel comfortable in the water, your Kinesiologist may have you perform exercises in the deep end wearing a floatation belt. Most community centres have floatation belts available for patrons to use.

You do not need to know how to swim to participate.

Group water aerobics classes are tailored for someone who does not have physical limitations or soft tissue injuries. They are aimed at increasing your cardio vascular fitness, strength and flexibility. Because aqua therapy is one-on-one it is designed to help the participant progress in their rehabilitation. The exercises are customized to the individuals injuries and physical condition.
It is recommended that you talk with your doctor to determine if pool based active rehab is appropriate for you. Please have your doctor provide you with a written referral.
Besides a bathing suit, I would recommend having some sandals that you wear while walking on the pool deck. The pools generally have other equipment such a pool noodles, aquatic dumbbells or aqua therapy belts that you may use.

What Our Patients are Saying

Nova Active Rehab was a vital part of my rehabilitation from a recent car accident. Prior to this I was undergoing treatment but not achieving the results needed to get back to where I was before the accident. I thank Thomas and Nova Active Rehab for the detailed program tailored to my needs to get results.

I have finished my rehab program with Thomas. Looking back on my progress, I really want to thank the Nova staff and Thomas for their help and support. Rehab is not easy. Thomas has been very professional and detail oriented in figuring out my muscle weaknesses and finding ways to improve them.

I really want to let you know how wonderful working with Matthew was.  I am stronger than when I first came to work with him, but more so, he taught me stretches and movements to continue my healing beyond active rehab.  Most importantly, Matthew was very personable, took the time to listen to me to ensure I was getting the best out of my exercises, and was always so encouraging.  I want you to know Matthew is an amazing therapist, and I miss seeing him every week!
